U.S. international Terrence Boyd signs with Darmstadt 98

The U.S. International looks to get his career back on track with the relegation-threatened Bundesliga side.

U.S. international Terrence Boyd has signed with Bundesliga side Darmstadt 98, the club announced Tuesday.

Formerly of RB Leipzig, Boyd was rumored to have drawn the interest of English Championship side Huddersfield Town and the New York Red Bulls of MLS but opted to remain in the Bundesliga on an 18-month contract.

The 25-year-old attacker had spent parts of the past three seasons with RB Leipzig, but a pair of anterior cruciate ligament injuries had limited him to just eight appearances with the first team since 2014-15. Boyd returned to action this season, playing entirely with RB Leipzig II in Germany’s fourth division, starting nine games and scoring five goals.

He joins a Darmstadt side looking for a spark, as it sits at the foot of the Bundesliga table on just nine points. The club has scored the fewest goals in the league, with just 11 over 17 games. However, Boyd feels up for the task.

"I am glad the switch to Darmstadt 98 has worked and I want to get stuck in immediately to make the supposedly impossible possible,” Boyd said in a press release.

Prior to joining RB Leipzig, Boyd spent time with both Hertha Berlin and Borussia Dortmund’s reserve sides, racking up big goal totals in Germany’s lower divisions. He went on to Rapid Wien of the Austrian Bundesliga and scored 28 times in 59 league games over two years there.

Boyd has also been capped 14 times for the U.S. national team. His last appearance came in October 2016, as he came off the bench for a brief cameo in a friendly against New Zealand.
