Barton suspended for 18 months after admitting to FA misconduct charge

The former England international has been punished after breaching FA rules regarding gambling on football matches.

Joey Barton has been banned for 18 months by the Football Association over allegations the Burnley midfielder placed more than 1,000 bets on matches over a 10-year period.

The FA alleged that Barton, who has also been fined £30,000, made 1,260 bets over a 10-year period and has now hit the 34-year-old with a lengthy ban following an Independent Regulatory Commission hearing.

Burnley confirmed via their official website that Barton, who re-joined the Clarets on a short-term deal in January, plans to appeal the length of his ban.
